WEMBLEY STADIUM, LONDON - Manchester United ended a five-year and 278-day wait for a trophy as they beat Newcastle United 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final.
A match of high quality was short but full of emotion as the Red Devils prevailed thanks to first-half goals from Casemiro and Sven Botman's own net.
Man United won their first piece of silverware since winning the Carabao Cup and Europa League double in Jose Mourinho's first season in 2016/17.
For Newcastle, a major trophy will have to wait 68 years, although their performances in this competition — and throughout the season — will give the vocal Magpies at Wembley plenty of confidence that better days are on the horizon under Eddie Howe...

Man United had just three days to prepare for the game after their thrilling Europa League win over Barcelona, and it was a small relief for Red Devils fans that Marcus Rashford was named in the lineup despite carrying a knock from that game at Old Trafford.
It was a foul by Rashford that led to Casemiro's first goal back from the domestic ban in time for the game. Luke Shaw's cross from a free-kick was too inviting to pass up and Casemiro's header was too accurate for stand-in Newcastle goalkeeper Loris Karius, making his first appearance in senior football for nearly two years.
Rashford's form since the 2022 World Cup has been nothing short of sensational and even in a game where he wasn't at his best, it seemed inevitable that he would make a big impact. After combining with Wout Weghurst, Rashford ran at Sven Botman and drilled a low shot which deflected off the center-back's legs and looped over the helpless Karius.
It was an unfortunate goal to concede for the man whose mistakes saw Liverpool lose the 2018 Champions League final, and it has eroded faith from Newcastle players and fans alike.
Howe introduced Alexander Isak in the second half, but that allowed the Magpies to keep the ball in Man United's case and see if they could find a way through. They always failed.
Karius certainly made amends with a save from Rashford and a superb stop to deny Bruno Fernandes to keep the scoreline at 2-0, but the Red Devils ultimately ate up second-half time. The full-time scenes among the fans were definitely worth savoring.

Erik ten Hag was Man United's smartest move in a decade
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's decision to become Man United's next permanent manager had been discussed for months. As Ralph Rangnick's terrifically uninspiring interim spell wound down, it seemed as though a mammoth task awaited his successor.
Ten Haag's time in charge also got off to a rotten start, as they opened the Premier League season with a home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion and a 4–0 drubbing by Brentford. A 6-3 derby defeat to Manchester City at the start of October left many wondering if the former Ajax boss had what it takes to manage this club.
Those doubts are cleared.
The appointment of Erik ten Hag is Man United's smartest move in a decade. He not only offered players and football but also attracted the fanbase; Not since the days of Alex Ferguson has the Man United faithful felt so energized, and connected to their team.
Their performance in this final may not have been the most brilliant or free-flowing, but it got the job done effectively. There will be time for interesting football; This was all about winning, and winning for the manager.
